Street Children

Today, we shall be looking at the 13th theme of the 19DaysActivism for Campaign. And, this is about STREET Children (SC).

According to UNICEF, Street Children can be - Children living on the street, who sleep in public places, without their families. -Children who work on the streets during the day and return to their family home to sleep -Street Family Children, who live with their family on the street.


#FACTS
•SC are difficult to count. However, there is an estimated 100million street children in the world.

•Engaging in petty crime is very common amongst SC & often becomes necessary for them to survive.

•Approximately 30% of SC are girls, they are extremely vulnerable to abuse and violence, such as propositions from police, who ask for sexual favours in exchange for their release, or hazing initiations by or servitude for older street boys, in which physical and sexual abuse have been reported

•Due to their living conditions, bad diet, drug abuse etc., Street Children have very poor health. Most of them suffer malnutrition, STDs, Tuberculosis, Cholera, Oral problems, unplanned pregnancies, psychiatric disorder, etc. Yet, most street children tend not to trust the health services in their countries, and rarely perceive their poor health as a problem.

As an organisation, Street Children have been our target group as we move from one rural community to the other, looking out for out-of-school kids. It has been an exciting exercise registering kids back to School, especially Private Schools. Attached herewith is the photograph of the first Street Family we supported, and they are still beneficiaries...
